What Vaccines Do Children Need Before Starting School?

Completing the required immunizations for schools can be a hassle for busy parents, but they are necessary for children’s safety and well-being. In this article, we discuss what vaccines children need before starting school.

What Vaccines Do Children Need Before Starting School?

School facilities bring large numbers of children together, making it easy for any disease to spread quickly. Educational institutions require vaccines because they help protect children from infectious diseases and prevent outbreaks that may harm children’s health and disrupt educational processes.

Vaccines Required for Kindergarten

Many of the diseases targeted by school-required vaccines are highly contagious and easily spread through sneezing and coughing, and can linger in the air. The list of vaccines required for starting kindergarten includes:

The MMR Vaccine

The MMR vaccine protects from measles, mumps, and rubella. Measles is highly contagious and can cause fever, a rash, and serious complications such as pneumonia or brain swelling. Mumps can lead to swollen glands and, in some cases, complications affecting hearing or fertility. Rubella is generally mild in children but can cause severe congenital disabilities if a pregnant person is infected.

Polio Vaccine

The polio vaccine protects from poliomyelitis, a viral disease that can lead to paralysis or even death.

Chickenpox (Varicella) Vaccine

The varicella vaccine protects against chickenpox, a contagious disease that causes an itchy rash and fever. While chickenpox is often mild in children, in some cases, it can lead to complications such as skin infections or pneumonia.

DTaP Vaccine

The DTaP vaccine protects against three bacterial infections: diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough). Diphtheria can block airways and make breathing difficult. Pertussis can also affect breathing by causing severe coughing, which is especially dangerous for young children. Tetanus causes painful muscle stiffness and can be life-threatening.

Hepatitis B Vaccine

Hepatitis B is a virus that affects the liver. It can be spread through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids and may lead to chronic liver disease or liver cancer later in life.

Additional Requirement in Middle School (Grade 7)

When children reach middle school (around age 10), they are required to receive one additional dose, or booster shot, of the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine. The booster shot is required because immunity acquired from the first vaccination wanes over time.

What if My Child Missed a Vaccine Dose?

If your child misses a vaccine dose, they can catch up without having to restart the series and repeat the first dose. Even though the timing of doses might be adjusted, we recommend getting back on track as soon as possible. Contact your child’s doctor or clinic and bring any immunization records you have, and ask for a catch-up schedule based on your child’s age.
Some schools may allow conditional enrollment when your child has not yet completed the full vaccination process, but has started and plans to complete it shortly. This means your child can attend school while finishing their immunizations, as long as you follow the vaccination schedule provided by your doctor.

Are Vaccines Safe?

Vaccines are very safe and one of the most studied medical products. Before any vaccine is approved, it undergoes years of research and careful testing, including laboratory studies and clinical trials that ensure its safety. Moreover, vaccines are necessary, as they prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and complications. Mild fever, fatigue, and soreness are normal, temporary side effects that mean that the immune system is working as it should.
