Anticoagulation Clinic

Education, Testing, and Management

Coumadin (warfarin) is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that reduces the formation of blood clots in the veins, arteries, lungs, and heart. It is important to monitor your anticoagulation therapy to ensure the medication is working effectively. The Coumadin dosage required may need to be adjusted periodically. West Texas Health can assist you in monitoring and managing your Coumadin medication needs.

Lab testing is the foundation of effective management of many conditions.

FAQs

Our lab services offer a range of screenings and tests. The type of test ordered will depend on the condition screened for. Common tests include:

  • Blood tests
  • Urine tests (urinalysis)
  • Sexually transmitted infection screenings
  • Drug testing
  • Viral tests (COVID-19, flu, RSV)

More specialized lab tests can include hormone panels or specific pathology tests. For example, we may order a biopsy to check for cancerous cells.

Generally, patients do need a doctor’s authorization for lab services. Your primary care provider or specialist will order specific tests. These screenings or tests are tailored to the condition of concern.

Some tests require no preparation, while others have specific instructions. Your doctor will provide you with clear instructions on how to prepare for a test. Most commonly, many tests (like blood tests) require fasting ahead of time. Other requirements can involve hydration or medication intake. Following these instructions is essential. Otherwise, the results of the lab work could turn out inaccurate.

The timeframe for your results depends on the type of test. Basic tests (e.g., blood, urine) could take as little as 1 to 2 business days. Some specialty tests can take up to 2 weeks. Your provider will let you know what timeline to expect for your screening.

Many insurance plans cover basic lab tests ordered by a medical provider. The amount of coverage varies, which affects your out-of-pocket costs. We recommend confirming your coverage with your insurance to avoid any surprise charges.

Our lab test services are all safe. Each test uses a minimally invasive approach. Some require only collecting urine or saliva. At most, a blood draw will involve collecting blood via a sanitized syringe. Even these tests are very quick and involve minimal discomfort.

We generally recommend scheduling an appointment to avoid lengthy wait times. Having an appointment is particularly helpful if you are fasting before your test. This helps ensure you can have your test done and then finally go eat.

Our lab services employ strict standards for obtaining and analyzing samples. These protocols promote accurate (and timely) results across the board. However, various other factors influence a test’s accuracy. If we suspect any issues with a result, we may repeat it to confirm the results. This is especially true for any abnormal findings.

If you have difficulties with needles, let us know. We gladly work with patients to find ways for a more comfortable experience. We may use smaller needs, provide distractions, or offer other assistance to help minimize your stress.
