  • BONE DENSITY SCAN Abilene, TX | West Texas Health

Bone Density Scan In Abilene Early detection of osteoporosis (or even risk for the disease) can make a life-changing difference. Though there is no cure, effective treatments can slow or stop bone density loss, allowing patients to reduce the risk of painful and debilitating fractures or breaks. West Texas Health is proud to provide a DEXA bone density scan near you in Abilene. Receive the imaging you need for a conclusive diagnosis, allowing you to build a path forward. What to Expect During Your Visit A DEXA (dual X-ray absorptiometry) bone scan is quick, painless, and noninvasive, but it can make a powerful positive difference in your life. The scan itself typically only takes about 15 minutes and is conducted by one of our skilled technicians. Once satisfactory imaging is obtained, the results can be sent directly to your physician. The treatment involves a small amount of X-ray energy being sent through the bones, which a machine then measures how much passed through. A lower mineral content in the bones means more rays pass through, which could be a sign of bone deterioration. Once your results are examined by your physician, then a treatment plan can be built. When to Schedule a Bone Density Scan Women over 65 and men over 70 years old are recommended to have a bone density scan every other year. People over the age 50 can also be eligible for a bone density scan. Changes in the bone are a natural part of aging, and staying up to date with those changes can provide vital health and lifestyle guidance. Additionally, patients below these ages may need a bone scan to evaluate density if they have additional risk factors for osteoporosis, such as a family history. Early detection is key, as modern treatments can allow patients to preserve bone density and lower their risk for a fracture or break. Why Choose West Texas Health for Bone Density Imaging West Texas Health has provided comprehensive care for the Abilene community for over 50 years. • PELVIC ULTRASOUND Abilene, TX | West Texas Health

Pelvic Ultrasound In Abilene A pelvic ultrasound is a safe, and noninvasive method for obtaining useful medical images to diagnose the cause of common gynecological symptoms such as abnormal bleeding or pelvic pain. You can expect at West Texas health diagnostic center that you are being examined by sonographers qualified and skilled in gynecological ultrasound and the exam is interpreted by radiologists and physicians experienced and subspecialized in gynecological diagnosis to provide you with optimal care and a good outcome. What to Expect During Your Visit Comfort, privacy, and confidentiality are the core of a positive experience when receiving a pelvic ultrasound. Most visits last between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the goal of your imaging. For a transabdominal pelvic ultrasound, a special gel is spread over the skin, allowing the ultrasound device to conduct sound waves effectively. These harmless waves bounce off the body's organs and tissues before being picked up by the device, creating a detailed image. For a transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer is covered with the gel and a sanitized sheath and inserted into the vagina. There is no pain, and the gel may feel cool but is not uncomfortable. The type of ultrasound you will need depends on the conditions for which you are being screened or tested. When to Schedule a Pelvic Ultrasound An OB/GYN ultrasound allows doctors to evaluate health concerns related to a patient's reproductive system. The range of cases where this imaging would be needed can vary, but some reasons a pelvic ultrasound may be needed include : Pelvic Pain Abnormal bleeding Abnormal menstrual cycles Confirming and dating early pregnancy Diagnosis of an ectopic pregnancy (fertilized egg outside the uterus) Check for causes of fertility concerns Routine monitoring of a developing fetus Evaluate for signs of pelvic inflammatory disease Why Choose West Texas Health for Women's Care For over 50 years, West Texas Health has been a central part of the Abilene community, providing accessible, high-quality care for people living in the West Texas area. • Mammography Abilene, TX | West Texas Health

Mammography 3D Digital Breast Mammography 3D Mammogram is one of the most effective tools for the early detection of breast cancer, finding breast cancer in an early stage is the best way to reduce mortality from breast cancer. Outcomes and a nearly 100% cure rate are possible when cancers are found in stage 0, something that’s possible only with screening mammography. This safe procedure plays a central role in saving the lives of women worldwide every day. With 3D breast mammography (also called 3D digital breast tomosynthesis), a detailed image of the breast is obtained in thin slices with higher resolution allowing the Breast Imaging MD to see through dense breast tissue. 3D mammography’s unique technology allows a reduced false positive rate which means fewer women are called back for additional views, the accuracy of cancer detection when small is also significantly higher. What to Expect During Your Visit? We conduct 3D digital mammography in a comfortable facility. The exam lasts about 10 to 15 minutes, during which your technician will take detailed X-r ays of each breast. The machine compresses the breast between two plates, with the X-ray arm moved to take images of the breast from multiple angles. These individual images are composited to create a 3D representation of each breast's internal tissues. Results are ready either the same day or the following day. However, a few cases take longer if images need to be compared with prior results. While the exam can be briefly uncomfortable for the breasts, the process is quick. When to Schedule Your Mammogram For patients with no significant risk factors for breast cancer, routine screenings only need to start once you reach 40 years. Annual screenings start at age 40 and to continue until a life expectancy of 7 years is reached. For those with an elevated risk such as a strong family history of cancer, screening should start earlier and mammography may need to be supplemented by screening breast ultrasound. Why Choose West Texas Health for Mammography West Texas Health has served the community of Abilene for the past 50 years, ensuring quality and accessible care for thousands of patients. • ULTRASOUND Abilene, TX | West Texas Health

Ultrasound In Abilene Ultrasound imaging is a safe and effective means of evaluating internal organs. Also called sonography, this imaging method allows physicians to high-resolution images of internal organs to aid in the diagnosis of a range of medical conditions, from gall stones to breast cancer. It is also the most common imaging method for pregnant patients to track the health and development of the unborn baby and to assess symptoms experienced in pregnancy. Ultrasound is uniquely valuable in evaluating causes of gynecological symptoms ranging from abnormal uterine bleeding to pelvic pain and menstrual disorders. At West Texas Health, we are proud to offer medical ultrasound exams performed by experienced technologists and interpreted by expert Breast and Gynecological Imaging doctors. What to Expect During Your Visit Every ultrasound exam is conducted in a comfortable facility. Depending on the type of and reason for your ultrasound, the exam can take between 20 and 60 minutes. A water-based gel is spread over the body area to be examined, and then the sonographer moves a wand-like device over the skin. This device bounces harmless sound waves off the body's internal structures and picks them back up to create images. The entire process is painless, and it is safe for patients of all ages. When to Schedule a Breast Ultrasound We also are happy to work with patients who need a breast ultrasound as part of their breast cancer screening regimen. A breast ultrasound is often needed when your physician needs imaging to determine if a growth in the breast is a fluid-filled cyst or a solid breast tumor. Ultrasound features help the Breast Imaging specialists to determine if a biopsy of a breast lump is needed. As breast ultrasounds do not expose patients to radiation, they are often recommended for patients who need breast cancer screening while under 30 years old. • SECOND OPINION Abilene, TX | West Texas Health

Second Opinion In Abilene A medical second opinion is when a doctor other than your original physician or specialist goes over exam or imaging results and your overall medical chart. They then can provide support by making an independent diagnosis, ruling out a diagnosis, providing alternate explanations for health issues, offering different treatment plans, or any combination of the above. The goal is to have a second experienced mind evaluate your situation so that your decisions moving forward can be made with greater confidence and peace of mind. At West Texas Health in Abilene, we are proud to offer second opinion services for the results of breast ultrasound, mammography, and pelvic ultrasound. What to Expect from a Second Opinion Consultation Second opinions are essential for any situation where a difficult or impactful decision about your health is to be made. Most commonly, patients will seek a second opinion for a diagnosis made from imaging exams, such as a breast ultrasound, mammography, or pelvic ultrasound. Seeking a second opinion is never offensive to your physician and is an expected part of the process, as it promotes patient autonomy, well-being, and safety. When you have a second opinion consultation at West Texas Health, some of the things to expect can include: Diagnostic Information: A second opinion on test results or exam findings can provide new information, confirm existing diagnoses, or provide alternate explanations for health problems. Exploring Treatments: Medicine is a continually evolving field, and not every medical center offers or is familiar with the same treatments. A second opinion can widen your range of options by working with a physician with a different knowledge base. Empowering Your Decisions: Patient autonomy is central to health care, and a second opinion can put you in more control over your decisions. You can get a better sense of how a treatment works, what side effects might be, and what outcomes may look like. When to Seek a Second Opinion We recommend seeking a second opinion for any diagnosis or exam results that could relate to severe illness or treatment options that can substantially impact one's life. Most commonly, a second opinion is sought for cancer or tumor diagnoses, providing further assessment of results from a breast ultrasound, mammography, or pelvic ultrasound. Why Choose West Texas Health for a Second Opinion For over 50 years, West Texas Health has been a staple of health care in the Abilene community.
